Genre and Conventions

Teen film is a film that is targeted at teenagers and young adults (13-21), the films are influenced by the interests of teenagers and their daily activities.

Within teen film there are sub genres such as:

  • Action
  • Drama
  • Comedy
  • Romance
  • Thriller
There are many conventional themes within teen film such as; drinking, partying, friends, sports, violence and love.

The following display some of these conventions:

Rebel without a cause 1955:

  • Friendship





Love and Basketball 2000:

In teen films there are always the typical characters present such as the victim, bully, blank minded girl like Karen Smith in mean girls, leader in the pack Troy Bolton from high school musical etc.

The reason they use these characters is that so every teenager can relate to the situation or grab a real interest in what's happening within the film.
